A recent Xbox announcement is great news for Xbox and Microsoft fans. It could also be very bad news for the PS4. Microsoft revealed on Reddit its new plans for those who own Xbox One consoles. And it sounds a bit like the backwards compatibility announcement made last year at E3. That was great news, but this one might be better. Microsoft and Xbox added over 160 games to the list of older games playable on the One. This may have helped keep their fans around longer and not switch to the PS4. But there was one problem Xbox fans wanted fixed. Multi-disc support for backwards compatibility.
Microsoft answers the call
The multi-disk support conundrum has left Xbox fans wondering when. However, the time has come. Microsoft recently revealed that Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut is backwards compatible. This is great news since Deus Ex is a multi-disc game. Major Nelson, the director of programming for the Xbox, confirmed on Twitter the multi-disc support. Major Nelson also praised the engineers at BC. This opens the door to endless possibilities. A fan could have all the games from the 360 at their disposal.
The next generation Xbox
Some may worry about the future of backward compatibility and multi-disk support. Especially since next-generation models will certainly be released by Microsoft. But users will be able to buy all the classic 360 titles they want on the online store dedicated to backwards compatibility. Users will also be able to put their old, but now new, games into their One and the console will magically run them. They'll be ready to play in minutes.
What does this mean for the PS4?
Microsoft has worked hard to bring the One up to gaming standards. Backwards compatibility and recent multi-drive support add to its refinement. This could put the PS4 under pressure. Previously, fans of Sony's Playstation had little to worry about. The PS4 has the PS Plus service, better performance for games and 1TB hardware. Sony's design team has also done a better job. But the design has its limitations. Microsoft's hard work may soon tip the scales in its favor.
