To say that the world of GTA 5 is impressive is an understatement. Rockstar has outdone itself with GTA 5, and the entire game has been beautifully designed. GTA 5 is indeed an open world video game and one of the best of its kind. However, that doesn't mean that other open world games aren't up to the task. Outside of GTA 5, here are the best open world games of all time, in no particular order.
NUMBER 1: ASSASSIN'S CREED IV: BLACK FLAG
Come on, you knew an Assassin's Creed game was going to make this list. This game is a vast improvement over the oft-criticized Assassin's Creed III. As you navigate the open waters, you'll find constant entertainment and the sense of adventure is masterful.
NUMBER 2: GTA III
GTA III is basically the Super Mario 64 of the open world phenomenon. Just as Super Mario 64 launched the 3D platform game, GTA III put the open world genre on the map. It's one of the most legendary games of all time, and it's still a pleasure to play today.
NUMBER 3: BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY
Let's be honest, superhero video games are not generally considered the best video games. There are some great ones out there, but they are rare. That all changed with the release of Batman: Arkham Asylum. Then it changed again when the world played Batman: Arkham City. The experience of this game is unparalleled, as you can put on Batman's boots.
NUMBER 4: THE LEGEND OF ZELDA
Oh, the glory days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. This system is widely considered the best system of all time, and The Legend of Zelda certainly helped. Granted, this game lacks the modern appeal of open world games, but the gameplay of modern games doesn't compare to the original Legend of Zelda either.
