Every spring, the 32 NFL teams gather for the annual player selection meeting, known as the NFL Draft. To explain, the NFL Draft is designed to level the playing field and give weaker teams the best chance to select the top college prospects entering the league. The best college players in the country are selected by NFL teams, but first they are asked to show their skills and strengths in a series of physical and mental tests at the NFL Combine. They do this in an effort to impress key personnel from NFL teams and hope to be selected by one of the teams in the three-day NFL Draft.
In the draft, each of the 32 teams receives at least one pick in each of the seven rounds. The order of selection is determined by the reverse order of finish from the previous season. In order to keep the NFL as competitive as possible, the team with the worst record is selected first in each round. Teams are placed in reverse order of their records from the previous season. In other words, the team with the worst record is picked first. The Super Bowl champion always gets the 32nd pick, regardless of its regular season record.
The draft currently lasts seven rounds and is televised for three days. In the first round, each team has 10 minutes to select their pick. Then seven minutes in the second round, five minutes in rounds three through six and four minutes in the seventh round. Part of the excitement of the draft is that teams try to "move up" to get a better player or "move down" to acquire more picks.
Most teams follow a point system to determine if trading draft spots is worth it. Each spot in the seven rounds is assigned a value. For example, the Cleveland Browns have the first pick in 2017. It has a value of 3,000 points. Teams can trade future picks for players to improve their draft position. For a team to attempt to get this spot, the Browns should expect a combination of picks close to 3000 points. In this scenario, the advantage for the team trading with the Browns is that they get to pick the player they want. And the advantage for the Browns? They acquire several draft picks to fill the team's many holes. And after winning just one game last season, the Browns need all the help they can get.
