Earlier this week, Microsoft released a statement saying that it will allow Xbox users to play against PS4 and PC gamers. The platform is already open to developers who want to support networked play, and Sony has even expressed openness to the idea.
PS4 AND PC: OLD FRIENDS
Cross-platform support is nothing new for Sony. In 2002, fans saw several PC titles supported on both PS2 and PC. Today, Sony has opened the debate by inviting Microsoft Xbox to join the adventure. Any publisher or developer interested in cross-platform gaming is invited to share their thoughts and opinions, Sony says. While this response doesn't exactly say that they want to work with Microsoft, it's clear that they will, at the very least, listen to all ideas to create an Xbox vs PS4 scenario.
MICROSOFT'S XBOX WANTS IN ON THE ACTION
The dream of Xbox gamers taking on PS4 gamers is still just a wild dream. Neither Sony nor Microsoft has really confirmed anything, but some believe their efforts to stay quiet are a way to encourage. Until E3 in June, Sony and Microsoft will let this idea develop on its own. Frankly, it's a strategic move. Instead of forcing PC, Xbox and PS4 co-op on the legion of gamers, some things are best left to the imagination. For now, only one game, Rocket League, is suggested for cross-network play, but there are other rumors floating around.
DEVELOPERS WILL FACE A CHALLENGE
Cross-platform compatibility is a nice idea in theory, but will it really work? The difference in gameplay between consoles and a PC could lead to some strange conflicts. For example, when playing a shooter on a computer, moving a character is much faster and more efficient. However, on a console, simply turning the character around can take forever due to the lack of sensitivity of the controllers. This can create unfair advantages. It's much easier to click a mouse button than to wield a controller on the PS4. Ultimately, it will be up to the developers to level the playing field if we are ever to have a truly equal cross-platform experience.
