Despite the hype surrounding the latest installment in the Dark Souls series, it seems that many fans have a love-hate relationship with the game. This series of dark gothic games, filled with monsters, haunting landscapes and enigmatic stories, is best known for its extreme difficulty. Dark Souls 3 looks to be just as difficult. The only thing harder than the game itself might be keeping your sanity.

DARK SOULS 3: A RETURN TO FORM

Fans of the Dark Souls series were faced with mediocrity in Dark Souls 2. The latest installment in the series, however, marks a triumphant rebound, filled with nostalgia and, of course, difficulty. Some say Dark Souls 3 is easier than its two predecessors, but that's not saying much considering the mind-boggling frustration those games subject players to. The difficult nature of the game is a signature to be expected. In this new version, it seems to take on the role of a character. Players will have to interact with the challenging feel of the game to find a system that works for them. Until then, expect plenty of frustrating attempts at boss fights, coupled with a dark and depressing environment.

WHAT'S NEW

While Dark Souls 2 failed to bring any new insights, Dark Souls 3 brings loads of new features. Players can expect new weapons, spells and armor sets. Combat is tighter, more fluid and overall more fun to play. That said, Dark Souls 3 is far from cute. The demonic hell-like environment is an interesting aesthetic that is sure to raise a few hairs. If simply failing in the game isn't enough, players will be faced with a horrible sense of decrepitude and neglect everywhere they go. Inspiring is not the word one would use to describe it. If you didn't know what a dark soul feels like, a few minutes in this game should help you describe it.

GET READY TO GO CRAZY

Overall, fans of the series will enjoy this game. Dark Souls 3 may not live up to the original, but it offers a detailed, fluid and powerful experience. The nostalgia will be there, as will the challenge. Get ready to fight demons, both in the game and in your own mind, as you slowly go mad.
