Fans hated Call of Duty Infinite Warfare for its shift toward science fiction. Its competitor Battlefield 1, which seeks to capitalize on that, is sticking to the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" motto.
BATTLEFIELD ONE GOES BACK IN TIME TO BEAT CALL OF DUTY: INFINITE WARFARE
While Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare takes a more interstellar direction, Battlefield 1 one chooses to stay a little more rooted in World War I. There will be no space stations, aliens, planets or asteroids. There will only be ground troops, tanks, horses and old-fashioned fighter jets. Some question this decision, as World War I is certainly not as "exciting" as World War II. However, EA promises that there will be much more than mustard gas and trench foot.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has completely abandoned "authenticity". There is nothing authentic about the future because it hasn't happened yet. That's not the point here. But it is with Battlefield 1. They want to create a unique, personal, authentic, physical space. They want to go back to the roots of total warfare. It will take players into the heart of World War I where deep connections will be made with the characters. In contrast to the detached sci-fi fantasy of COD: IW.
BATTLEFIELD COMBINES PAST AND FUTURE TO BEAT CALL OF DUTY: INFINITE WARFARE
The people at COD think the future is, well, the future. They think players want more technology, more grotesque battles and a wider variety of weapons. This is not necessarily the case. EA describes "1" as a unique cross between old school combat and modern technology. Players get a new melee system designed to take hand-to-hand combat to the next level. They can choose between knives, pikes, maces and a bayonet. In addition, EA describes the game as a face-off with the new inventions of warfare at the time. They hope to portray how frightening it was for soldiers to see all this new technology. It will be in an immersive story like nothing else has ever been done before.
