Neverending Nightmares, an extremely dark and psychedelic game, has just been scheduled for release on PS4 and PlayStation Vita, according to creative director Matt Gilgenbach. The game tackles some heavy themes that Gilgenbach takes very much to heart. For those looking for an escape from reality, this is not it. For those looking to explore the darker and more delusional sides of mental illness, Neverending Nightmares may be the game for you.

USE YOUR PS4 TO PLAY WITH DEPRESSION

Mental illnesses have been receiving increasing attention lately. Some people think they are on the rise, but maybe our society is finally learning to talk about them. In the past, the right thing to do was to suppress your emotions and hold on. Today, we talk about it, or in this case, we play about it. Neverending Nightmares takes players to a dark, complex and twisted place. It puts you in a position you don't want to be in. It takes over your PS4 and Playstation Vita, places that usually represent happiness, and fills them with the stuff that nightmares are made of. It's a disturbingly realistic game, and you probably won't even be happy when you finish it.

"NIGHTMARES" BRINGS UNIQUE PLOT AND GRAPHICS TO PLAYSTATION

As we said, this game has nothing to do with Super Mario Sunshine. From the premise of the game to the graphics, everything in Neverending Nightmares is messed up.  There is no clear and coherent story. This only adds to the psychedelic nature of the game. Various paths with conflicting endings abound and will surely confuse you. As if that weren't enough, the PlayStation-enhanced graphics are purely haunting.

Inspired by the gloomy drawings of Eduard Gorey, the sketch-like visuals create a strange and intense atmosphere that sucks the hope out of the player. On the PS4, the visuals run at 1080p and 60 frames per second. On the Playstation Vita, the speed is also impressive: 60 frames per second. With graphics like that and blood-curdling music, you might want to have a nightlight handy.

EXPLORING YOUR DARK SIDE WILL HELP

For obvious reasons, it's scary to play games that make you face negative emotions. Society is so full of distractions that we can stuff our minds into and ignore the real issues. We keep ourselves busy with our PS4s and smartphones to escape the inner demons.  We should take an extended trip into the dank confines of the mind every now and then and fight those inner demons. It may not be fun, but it's a good way to understand the complexities of the mind and ultimately heal the soul. Before you do that, play this psychedelic game on your PlayStation Vita or PS4 first.
