Des Moines is full of great photo opportunities; you just have to know where to look. From spots near Drake University to the Des Moines Botanical Gardens and beyond, here are the best places to take family photos any time of year.
1. Drake University
You don't have to be a Drake University alum to appreciate the well-kept grounds of its campus. In fact, the university offers countless photo opportunities, especially near the reflecting pool and agora. This area of campus combines architecture, landscape and water, and is a great setting for vacation cards with family photos.
2. The Des Moines Botanical Garden
The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden offers a picturesque setting for your family photos. From season to season, the garden comes alive with a bouquet of beautiful flowers. So no matter where you choose, from the Wells Fargo Rose Garden to the Meredith Terraces, your photos will bloom with pops of color.
Guests are encouraged to take photos such as candids or family snapshots. However, when professional photos are taken on-site, guests or photographers must pay a location fee.
3. Historic East Village
Des Moines' Historic East Village is one of the city's first shopping districts. This area encompasses some of Iowa's most significant buildings, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the charm of the Historic East Village is alive and well.
You'll find brightly colored brick walls, stunning murals and even playful sidewalk art in this part of town. For a playful collection of photos, dress your family in bright, bold colors and patterns and step out of your comfort zone by striking playful poses for the camera.
4. Rotary Riverwalk Park
This destination park is an attractive playground for children and families. Rotary Riverwalk Park is located along the west bank of the Des Moines River - and it's hard not to miss. Not only does its architecture stand out, but the larger-than-life fishing bobber on the park's playground is a must-see.
The kids will love playing here, and you'll love taking your photos here too. For a fun photo set, dress the family in fishing shirts or fisherman-themed dress shirts. The giant bobber will make a great backdrop.
5. John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park
This year, the John and Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park will celebrate its 10th anniversary. This Des Moines park features artwork by 24 of the world's most famous artists. The 30 works of art located in the park provide great photo opportunities.
However, touching, sitting or climbing on any of the sculptures is prohibited. The sculpture park is easily accessible and well landscaped, with paths and trails winding through its 4.4 acres. Food and drink are allowed inside the park, so consider a picnic-themed photo shoot to capture memorable moments you and your family can cherish for years to come.
